Amazon SAFE-T Claim Time Limit: When the Claim Window Opens and Closes
File too early and Amazon rejects it. File too late and the money is gone. Here is how the SAFE-T claim window works.
Every SAFE-T claim for a return that never came back has a window: a date before which Amazon will not accept it, and a date after which it is too late.
The base date
The window is counted from a base date:
| Order type | Base date |
|---|---|
| Normal order, refunded | The refund date |
| Replacement pair | The latest of: original refund date, replacement refund date, replacement ship date |
When the window opens
Amazon waits for the return to arrive before accepting a "not received" claim โ in practice about 50 days after the base date. Many sellers set their reminder a day or two later to be safe.
When the window closes
The window stays open for a limited time after it opens. Claims older than that are not accepted, so reconcile every week instead of once a quarter.
Amazon can change these periods. Always check the current policy in Seller Central before filing.
Disputing "Returned to Seller"
If Amazon's return report marks an order Returned to Seller but the parcel never reached your warehouse, that is not a normal "return not received" claim. It must be disputed quickly โ within a short period of the status or refund date, whichever is later โ with your receiving records.
Never miss a window
Tracking hundreds of dates by hand does not work. The SAFE-T claim tool calculates the open and close date for every order, shows which claims are open now and alerts you when a window closes within 7 days.
