Meesho RTO vs Customer Return: How to Reconcile Returns Correctly

RTO and customer returns look similar but cost you differently. Mixing them up distorts your return ratio and hides real losses.

On Meesho, a large share of orders come back. But not all returns are the same, and treating them as one number leads to wrong decisions.

RTO (Return to Origin)

RTO means the parcel never reached the customer โ€” they refused it, were not available, or the address was wrong. The parcel travels back to you. RTO is about logistics: what matters is that the parcel physically comes back.

Customer return

A customer return means the customer received the product and sent it back โ€” wrong size, did not like it, damaged, or a different product claimed. These carry return charges and are a signal about your product and listing.

Why you must separate them

  • If RTO is counted as a return, your return ratio looks worse than it is, and you may stop selling a good product.
  • If RTO is included in the average return charge, the per-SKU cost of returns is wrong.
  • Both types still have to reach your warehouse. A missing RTO parcel is lost stock even if there was no charge.

How to reconcile

  1. Export your orders and payment report ZIPs from the supplier panel.
  2. Match everything by sub-order ID.
  3. Log every parcel that arrives โ€” the fastest way is scanning or typing the AWB number.
  4. Compare: returns and RTOs expected vs parcels received.
  5. Calculate return charges per SKU, using customer returns only, and compare with your average.

Our Meesho return reconciliation tool does this matching for you and keeps RTO separate automatically.
